This very simple plugin is generating flat files from custom values. Just hook this plugin with yours, and create a scheduler:

IntDataFile playerCounterDF  =   new  IntDataFile  (   "Player counter"  ,  "5min_players_counter"  , Interval.  MINUTE_5  ,   Thread   .  SYNC   )   {  
            @Override 
             public   int  data  (   )   {  
                 return  Bukkit.  getOnlinePlayers   (   )  .  size   (   )   ;  
             }  
         }   ;

This code is updating every 5 minutes the "5min_players_counter" file with current online players number. Your monitoring system (e.g. Zabbix ) can read this and create graph or trigger for notifications:

This is supporting Spigot and BungeeCord too. I am working on few things and sample plugins.

Known issues:

• The async thread is WIP
